PACE Co-rapporteurs to Visit Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 12 March /corr. Trend K.Ramazanova / The next visit by the PACE Monitoring Committee's co-rapporteurs, Andreas Herkel and Yevgeni Jivkova, to Azerbaijan is expected to take place in May, Herkel reported to Trend by telephone from Strasburg on 12 March.

"Our visit is expected to take place after completion of discussions between Azerbaijan and the Venice Commission regarding changes to the Electoral Code of Azerbaijan," Herkel said.

According to him, the PACE Monitoring Committee meeting will hear the report by the co-rapporteurs on Azerbaijan as a result of their visit to the country.

The Monitoring Committee meeting will take place in Paris on 18 March. Azerbaijan will be represented at the meeting by Samad Seyidov.

According to Herkel, it is simply a meeting for discussions. "However, we have proposals regarding political prisoners, freedom of speech and changes to the Electoral Code and we will discuss all these issues," Herkel said.

Azerbaijan joined the Council of Europe as a full-right member in 2001 and undertook obligations.
