The Azerbaijan Press Council has developed a report on media's highlighting the tragedy at the university. The report says that there has been much inaccurate information on the tragedy in newspapers.
"A total of 859 articles were published on the tragedy at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy on April 30-May 15. Some 725 of them is news and 219 - have official character," Press Council Chairman Aflatun Amashov said on May 20.
Amashov said the newspapers, basically, proffered to publish bloody photos. "Some 641 photos of them are so," the chairman of the press council said.
"Our newspaper has published few articles, as we followed high accuracy principles," Chief Editor of Azerbaijan newspaper Bakhtiyar Sadigov reported.
Sadigov said this tragedy can be regarded sensation for Azerbaijan. "But some media intends to create another sensation from this sensation," the chief editor said.
This tragedy once more revealed that Azerbaijani journalists cannot show high professionalism in extreme situations, Sadigov said. "Therefore, media puts forward versions which are not specified enough," Sadigov said.
The report says that media's attention to highlight the incident was accompanied with obvious unprofessional trends. "The fact that the non-electron press has few experiences to work under extreme conditions has been confirmed. It has become a trend to refuse positive skills acquired while creating sensation around the event," the document stressed.
It is necessary the Press Council to hold special events to improve journalists' professionalism when working under extreme conditions, Amashov said.
An armed man attacked Building 2 of the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy at early morning on April 30. According to preliminary reports, the armed man killed 12 and wounded 13 via Makarov revolver.
