Today, Prime Minister of Georgia Nika Gilauri and members of the State Coordination Commission for the integration into NATO handed over Georgia's annual national program to NATO Secretary General's Special Envoy to Central Asia and South Caucasus Robert Simmons and this means entry of document in the implementation phase.

Georgia is considering a document as an instrument of joining the alliance.

Gilauri said this document will help to implement the decision of the NATO summit in Bucharest, where it was announced that Georgia will become a mandatory member of NATO.

From his part, Simmons confirmed that the program is a tool for Georgia's entry to NATO, besides the Georgia-NATO Council. He stressed that the Alliance considers Georgia as a partner and do not intend to abandon the partnership because of the position of third countries.

In accordance with the decision of the NATO summit held in December 2008, the Administration of the Georgian State Ministry for European Affairs and Euro-Atlantic Integration in coordination with other agencies and in consultation with NATO's International Service has drafted the first annual national program, which was handed over to the alliance in early April.

Relevant changed were injected into the document as a result of examination of the document in Brussels taking into account the NATO's recommendations and in coordination with the State Ministry on European integration, and today it will be formally presented to the alliance.

On December 2-3, 2008, the NATO foreign ministers decided to continue the NATO-Georgia cooperation as part of the annual national program. This tool replaces a plan of individual partnership.

Annual National Program consists of 5 chapters and includes political, economic, military, legal issues, as well as issues related to security. Evaluation of the first annual program will take place in December this year.
