Iranian citizens in Azerbaijan actively participate in Iranian presidential elections: Ambassador

Iranian citizens in Azerbaijan are actively participating in Iranian presidential elections.

"Iranian citizens in Azerbaijan are interested in defining of the further fate of the country, like all Iranians. Therefore, from that point of view they will actively participate in voting. Voters stand in a long line to vote in the presidential elections," Iranian Ambassador in Azerbaijan Mohammad Bagir Behrami told Trend on June 12.

Iranian citizens in Azerbaijan are coming to elections stations opened in Baku and Nakhchivan to vote in presidential elections in Iran.

Iran is holding presidential elections today. Former Speaker Mehdi Karroubi, Former Prime Minister Mir Hussein Moussavi, Head of the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution (Sepah) Mohsun Rezai and incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are running for president. Iranian citizens in 130 countries worldwide will vote. Under Election Code, 304 polling stations have been opened in foreign countries. As many as 450,000 ballot papers have been sent to embassies.

Iran holds presidential elections every four years. The embassy said 1,350 Iranian citizens are illegible to vote in Azerbaijan. 

Approximately 700 Iranian citizens in Azerbaijan participated during the previous elections. "I hope that more Iranian citizens in Azerbaijan will participate in Iranian presidential elections of this year thasnks to pre-election agitation through media," Behrami said.

Iranian citizens in the Nakhchivan Republic of Azerbaijan are taking active participation in Iranian presidential elections, he added.

The vote will last from 08:00 to 18:00. It can be extended up to midnight, after which preliminary results will be announced.
