Georgia officially identified dates for local elections - May 30, Head of the Georgian Central Election Commission Zurab Kharatishvili said today. Changes to the Electoral Code, which defined the timing of the election, entered into force March 17.

Georgian Parliamentary Speaker David Bakradze said all parties must submit their candidates for leadership positions of local authorities by March 30. "We will also present our own candidate for the post of Tbilisi mayor March 30. All will be surprised if this is not the current mayor, Gigi Ugulava," he said.

Bakradze expressed his confidence that the elections will be held in a fair and objective way.

"The Georgian authorities do everything possible to ensure the representation of international organizations in the elections. 400 observers will arrive only from a democratic institution of the OSCE in Georgia.  It is a very big figure," he said.

The speaker stressed that representatives of other international organizations and individual countries will also observe the local elections.

"This is a test of democracy for Georgia and we intend to pass it well," Bakradze said.
