Azerbaijan and Iran exchanged prisoners in the state border near Astara Friday, according to Rafig Ramazanov, the spokesman for the Central Department of Execution of Sentences of the Azerbaijani Justice Ministry, Trend reports.

Azerbaijan delivered up 18 Iranian citizens, who served their term of imprisonment in the territory of the country. In its turn Iran gave up one prisoner to Azerbaijan for service of the imprisonment term in the Motherland.

Ramazanov noted that the Iranian Justice Ministry sent a petition to the Azerbaijani Justice Ministry with respect to allow 20 Iranian citizens to serve the imprisonment in their Motherland. The exchange of prisoners was implemented on the base of international convention that the two countries joined. The embassies accredited in Azerbaijan regularly submit appeals to the Ministry with respect to get familiar with the state of citizens who serve their imprisonment term in the country. Ramazanov assured that they offer every facility for familiarity with the state of the foreign citizens kept in the prisons.

In accordance with the relevant agreement between Azerbaijan and Russia, 28 Azerbaijani prisoners were extradited to Azerbaijan late this February for service of the imprisonment term in the motherland. The sentences have been issued on 14 prisoners, who committed crimes in the territory of Russia. The cases of other 14 people who perpetrated crimes in Azerbaijan and fled to Russia are currently under investigation.

Ramazanov said that the Justice Ministry received 250 appeals from different countries, part of which has been resolved. At present around 380 people serve their imprisonment term in Azerbaijan.
