An Immunization Week will be conducted in Azerbaijan on April 25 - 30 within the European Immunization Week.

The main goals of the Immunization Week in Azerbaijan are the followings: ensure polio free status maintenance by strengthening surveillance and increasing polio immunization coverage; organize extensive public awareness campaign with focus on increase of overall routine immunization coverage; on the way to achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDG)-measles, rubella elimination to strengthen measles, rubella and CRS (congenital rubella syndrome) surveillance, the UN Baku Office told Trend.

During Immunization Week area health facilities will provide immunization services according to national immunization schedule to all children who missed routine vaccination due to any possible reason.

In framework of Immunization Week following events will be conducted:

Supplementary Immunization Activities on polio among children under five of age in Guba, Gusar and Khachmaz districts-1st round-April 25-30, 2011, 2nd round-May 23-28, 2011
Integrated surveillance training on poliomyelitis, measles and rubella will be conducted in Ganja, Barda, Kurdamir, Sabirabad, Sheki, Guba, Lenkaran with involving of neighboring districts and towns - April 25- May 25, 2011

The goal of the European Immunization Week is to boost awareness and increase the success of immunization program which is vital to prevent child diseases and protect life.

In October 2005, the WHO Regional Office for Europe and several member-states conducted the first European Immunization Week. In 2011, the 52 countries will take part in the initiative, the largest number since EIW began in 2005. The theme for EIW 2011: Shared solutions to common threats.

In 2007, Azerbaijan has joined the European Immunization Week initiative of the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe.
