Orders for the construction of new ships in the world reached their peak level in 2021, Trend reports citing the UK Clarkson Research Services company.

Reportedly, 57 oil tankers were ordered this year. The total number of tankers ordered this year amounted to 88 tankers, and bulk carriers (a ship for the transport of bulk cargo) were also 88.

Moreover, 526 ships for various purposes with a total deadweight of 46.4 million tons have been ordered worldwide, the company noted.

“The growth is primarily due to an increase in the number of orders for the construction of container ships. Over 2020, contracts were signed for the construction of 218 container ships with a total capacity of 2.2 million TEU (or a total deadweight of 22.9 million tons) fleet is approaching 20 percent," the UK company said.

Clarkson Research Services also noted that Chinese and South Korean shipyards have already accepted the majority of orders this year.

The shares of Chinese and South Korean shipbuilding enterprises are 46 percent each in the global volume of shipbuilding.
