Desalination plant at the KazMunayGas-operated Karazhanbas oil field is to be launched in 1Q2021, Trend reports citing KazMunayGas National Company (KMG).

The plant commissioning was postponed from December 2020 to the 1Q2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, which led to a delay in the supply of equipment.

Currently, measures to clean up oil pollution, the total area of which is 350 hectares is underway. Some 143 hectares were already cleaned up. The company also liquidated 11 wells drilled in the late 1970s in the coastal zone of the Caspian Sea and disposed of 180,000 tons of waste at a temporary storage site.

The memorandum of understanding and cooperation on the plant’s construction was signed between Ozenmunaigas JSC and KMG Engineering LLP (both KMG subsidiaries) with the Zhanaozen city’s akimat (administrative center).

Memorandum oversees changes to the feasibility studies for the construction of the plant developed by KMG Engineering. As a result, a desalination plant with a capacity of 50,000 cubic meters a day will be constructed in the region’s Kenderli recreation area.

The project’s implementation will have a positive impact on the Manystau region’s environment and, in particular, will provide the region’s residents with full access to drinking water.

Mangystau region is among Kazakhstan’s regions where the water supply issue is particularly relevant, as the region is located in a semi-desert zone, and the region’s water resources are limited.

KazMunayGas National Company is Kazakhstan's national operator for exploration, production, refining, and transportation of hydrocarbons, representing the state in Kazakhstan's petroleum sector.
