Iran declares volume of fish caught from Caspian Sea

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 22

A total of 301 tons of bony fish worth 168 billion rials (about $4 million) have been caught from the Caspian Sea as of October 11, 2020, Deputy Director of Gilan Fishing Department Akbar Ildirim said, Trend reports citing the department’s information portal.

According to him, the fishing increased by 17 percent in terms of volume compared to the same period last Iranian year.

The official added that, 220 tons of mullet fish, 64 tons of kutum fish and 17 tons of other fish, including carp, were caught from Caspian Sea during the reporting period.

"Furthermore, 4,360 tons of kilka fish were caught on the shores of the Caspian Sea within this period. This is an increase of 21 percent compared to the same period last Iranian year," he said.

Ildirim also noted that the total value of caught kilka fish amounted to 193 billion rials (about $4.59 million).

The deputy director emphasized that 4,150 tons of kilka were delivered to factories for the production of fish powder, and 211 tons to the market.

There are 4,000 hunters in 51 fishing companies engaging fishing in Iran's Gilan Province. The fishing is carried out from the Caspian Sea in the province from October 11 to April 10.
