SOCAR launches new platform in Caspian Sea

The State Commission has launched a new 10-platform in the Bank of Darwin field, developed by SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan), SOCAR said on Oct. 7.

The new platform is installed in water depth of 17 meters. It is planned to drill 12 wells from the platform. "Oil Rocks" Drilling Unit has already started drilling. Currently, 121 wells are under exploration in the Bank of Darwin. The total daily production from the field is 200 tons, representing 44 per cent of the total production OGPD.

The Bank of Darwin field is being developed since 1950. During this period, there have been drilled 651 wells and has been extracted 16.2 million tons of oil. Recoverable oil reserves in the field are estimated at three million tons. Totally, 8 wells should be drilled in 2009.

Currently, work is underway on the construction of another major platform, which consists of 12 fields. The platform is designed to drill 20 wells to a depth of 1,300 meters. The platform will be installed at water depths of 15 meters.
