SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) will construct a new large platform No 7 in shallow water of the Guneshli field for the next two months, a source in SOCAR told Trend Oct. 19.

At present, the upper platform modules are being assembled and installation work is being conducted, the statement said.

"In parallel, the oil and gas pipelines and a 12 kilometer-subsea electrical cable are being laid," the statement said.

The platform is designed for drilling 20 producing wells with an opportunity to further expand up to 32 wells.

"The reserves of the field are very large, so the platform is being built with some expectation," the source said. "If necessary, it will be possible to drill additional production wells there. It will be commissioned for the next two months. The drilling of the first well will begin in early 2016."

Guneshli field plays an important role in Azerbaijan's oil and gas industry. The field's shallow part is developed by SOCAR independently, while the deepwater part - within the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli block - is developed jointly with foreign partners.

In total, SOCAR produced over 8.32 million metric tons of oil in 2014, compared to 8.31 million metric tons in 2013.

Over 42.4 million metric tons of oil was produced in Azerbaijan in 2014, compared to 43.5 million metric tons in 2013.
