Sumitomo Corporation to build power station in Turkmenistan by 2021

Japanese Sumitomo Corporation, as a general contractor, launched the construction of a 432 megawatt gas turbine power station in Turkmenabat city of Turkmenistan’s Lebap region, Trend reports referring to the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper.

In an interview with Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper, Masao Kino, Deputy General Manager of Sumitomo Corporation, said that this gas turbine power station is planned to be commissioned in 2021. Turkish company Ronesans has been involved in the project implementation. The equipment is expected to be supplied in May–June 2020.

"Among many suppliers of combined cycle units, we have chosen Mitsubishi,” Kino said. “This manufacturer’s equipment has been adapted to Turkmenistan’s climatic conditions, where an additional cooling system is used."

The funds for the project implementation will be provided by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and other Japanese financial institutions, with which the Turkmen State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs concluded loan agreements in the amount of $152,618,478 and 13.101 billion Japanese yen.

According to the program of the socio-economic development of Turkmenistan, the total volume of electricity generated in the country during the next seven years is planned to be increased up to 33 billion kilowatt hours.
