Kazakhstan to produce electricity by burning waste

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov.29

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Kazakhstan will start producing electricity by burning waste, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources Magzum Mirzagaliyev said, Trend reports with reference to the press office of the ministry.

According to the minister, six waste burning complexes will be built in Kazakhstan within the framework of Waste to Energy project. The produced electricity is expected to be supplied to electricity grid similarly to renewable energy sources.

As Mirzagaliyev noted, this project will allow not only to significantly decrease volume of waste in landfill but also to attract investments in waste recycling.

He added that the country is planning to increase the share of thermal recycling to 30 percent of total waste management by 2025, which equals the average share in countries of European Union.

“There already are a number of potential investors, who are ready to develop recycling in Kazakhstan,” Mirzagaliyev said.

These measures will allow to decrease budget expenditures for the elimination of natural dumps, construction of landfills, as well as decrease harm to the environment and health, the minister concluded.

The issue of solid waste utilization is one of the relevant issues for Kazakhstan. Thus, solid waste management is one of the main points in Kazakhstan’s concept of transition to ‘green’ economy. Furthermore, the country is aiming to increase the solid waste share to 40 percent by 2030.
