Construction of Georgian Mtkvari HPP reaches final stage

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 8

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The construction of the tunnel with the largest diameter was completed within the framework of the project of the Georgian Mtkvari Thermal Power Plant (TPP), Trend reports with reference to Georgian media.

The length of the tunnel is 9.6 km and the diameter is 6 meters.

The Georgian Co-Investment Fund said that the construction of the tunnel was one of the most important and long-term stages of the project, and with its completion the construction reached its final stage.

As noted, earthwork is carried out only by one machine in accordance with the modern trends and methodology. This practice is actively used in the energy sector to excavate rocky tunnels, as the technology is safe, fast and economical.

The total installed capacity of the Mtkvari TPP is 53 MW, while the average annual electricity generation is 251.5 million kWh.

“Mtkvari HPP was a project launched in 2009 and then suspended for many years. Active work on the project was resumed in 2014, after the Georgian Co-Investment Fund acquired a 100 percent stake. To meet the growing demand for electricity in Georgia, it is necessary to maximize the potential of rich hydropower resources. The Mtkvari TPP project meets this demand and allows Georgia to fully utilize the country's hydropower potential,” said Tsotne Ebralidze, general director of the Georgian Co-Investment Fund.

According to George Tkhelidze, Deputy General Director of TBC Bank, which is financial partner of Mtkvari HPP, support by the Bank for the development of the energy sector is a strategic area.

"TBC is the leading bank in Georgia in terms of financing the energy sector. We are pleased that the Mtkvari TPP project is being implemented on the initiative of the Georgian Co-Investment Fund, and I hope that by financing such projects we will support the development of the Georgian energy sector," Tkhelidze said .

The total investment in the Mtkvari TPP construction project is $157 million, and its completion is expected in 2021.
