The overhaul work began at 3rd South Pars Refinery of Iran's South Pars Gas Company on June 22, said Mohammad Shafi Moazzeni, director of the oil processing plant, Trend reports citing the company’s website.

Moazzeni noted that the overhaul of the refinery will last 20 days.

He added that among the major repairs are the connection of the plant's electricity to the Iranian electricity grid and the repair of turbo generators to ensure the plant's flawless operation.

The director stressed that changes will be made in the reactors in the 3rd and 4th phases of the plant, and they will continuously produce ethane.

"In phases 4th and 5th of the plant, pipes for amino acid converters for ethane production, as well as pipes for the production of propane and butane will be replaced," he added.

The Gas produced in 4th and 5th phases of the South Pars gas field is sent to the 3rd processing plant of the company. The refinery processes 5.52 million cubic meters of gas, 67,000 barrels of gas condensate, 2,550 tons of ethane, 1,960 tons of propane, 1,210 tons of propane and 285 tons of sulfur per day.

The South Pars gas field is a joint gas field of Iran and Qatar. The proven reserves of the South Pars Gas Field are estimated at 51 trillion cubic meters of gas, of which 36 trillion are extractable. At present, Iran's daily gas production from the South Pars gas field is more than 700 million cubic meters. Iran has so far spent $33 billion on projects related to the South Pars gas field.

Gas from Iran's South Pars gas field is transported to refineries in the Pars Special Energy Economic Zone (port city of Asaluyeh in Iran's southern Bushehr Province) via a gas pipeline.

Around 75 percent of Iran's gas is supplied by this field.
