It is necessary to build new power plants that can generate 6,000-10,000 megawatt-hours of electricity to reduce or eliminate the use of hydroelectric power plants in Iran, the Spokesman for the Ministry of Energy of Iran Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi told ILNA, Trend reports.

Rajabi Mashhadi emphasized that 2.3 quadrillion rials (about $54.7 billion) is needed to build power plants with the generation capacity of mentioned volume.

“The generation of hydroelectric power plants in Iran amounted to about 10,000 megawatt-hours over the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021). While at present, an average of 4,000 megawatt hours of electricity generated by these HPPs must use. According to this, the electricity generation at hydroelectric power plants in Iran has been reduced by 6,000 megawatt-hours,” the official added.

Reportedly, the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2020 through March 20, 2021) is considered one of the driest in 50 years.

The decline in electricity generation at Iran's HPPs, on the other hand, the country's electricity consumption of about 60,000 megawatt-hours daily has created a number of problems in electricity supply (intermittent electricity supply, and so on).
