Iran clarifies reduction of gas exports to Iraq

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Iran's gas exports to Iraq were reduced by 38 million cubic meters daily for six months under the agreement, Caretaker of the Dispatching Department of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Mohammad Reza Joulaei told Shana news agency, Trend reports.

According to Joulaei, the reduction in gas exports has nothing to do with Iraq's gas debt to Iran.

The official added that Iran’s gas exports to Iraq have been reduced for about two weeks and will last for six months.

Reportedly, on September 1, 2021, the Ministry of Electricity of Iraq announced that the volume of Iran’s gas exports to Iraq decreased from 49 million cubic meters daily to 8 million cubic meters, resulting in a reduction in electricity generation in Iraq by 5,500 megawatt-hours.

According to the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), Iraq owes Iran $5 billion in connection with gas exports. Of that amount, $3 billion was frozen in the Trade Bank of Iraq, while $2 billion was not identified by the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity.
