Research institute in Iran looks to increase extraction from Azar oil field

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 14

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The Research Institute of Petroleum Industry of Iran (RIPI) intends to increase extraction from the Iran-Iraq joint Azar oil field (called Badra in Iraq), an official of the institute, Sabir Mohammadi, said, Trend reports citing the institute’s website.

“Two projects related to the Azar oil field have been prepared in cooperation with the Sarvak Azar Engineering and Development (SAED) and the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry. One of these projects was completed more than 6 months ago, and the main goal was to study the complexity of the field and its thermodynamics. In addition, one more project is planned to be implemented. The implementation phase of the project will begin as of September 22, 2021,” Mohammadi said.

The official added that the Azar field contains more than 4 billion barrels of light crude oil reserves. Due to its geological structure, high and low pressure oil layers, excavation in the field is one of the most difficult work.

According to him, the presence of a high percentage of hydrogen sulfide gas and carbon dioxide in the field increases the corrosive conditions in the field. This requires the use of more resistant alloys of equipment, pipes, various tools used in the wells of the field.

As reported, on March 1, 2021, the extraction from the Azar oil field was officially launched. So, 65,000 barrels of crude oil are currently extracted daily. A total of 1.4 billion euro has been spent on the plan to increase extraction from this field.

The preliminary extraction from the Azar oil field was launched in March 2017, and the crude oil extraction potential from this field was 30,000 barrels daily.

Some 20 wells with a total depth of 88 km were drilled at the field and 31.5 million barrels of crude oil were extracted from the field.

In total, 400 million barrels can be extracted from Iran's Azar oil field.
