Gas supply to Iran's north stabilized thanks to Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 7

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Gas pressure in the north provinces of Iran, especially in Golestan Province has stabilized, as a result of the swap of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan via Iran, Iranian Oil Mininster Javad Owji said, Trend reports citing Shana News Agency.

According to Owji, gas supplies from Turkmenistan to Iran have been suspended since 2016, which also led to a number of problems.

"As of November 2021, the problem was eliminated with the swap of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan via Iran. Currently, Iran is swapping 1.5-2 million cubic meters of gas a year from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan," the minister added.

Iran’s north and north-east provinces are located at the end of Iran's gas network, where gas pressure drops down, thus increasing consumption there during cold months. The contract between Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan can prevent a drop in gas pressure these regions of Iran. Due to low gas pressure, the mentioned alternative way is the best option for Iran to supply gas to the mentioned regions.

On November 28, 2021, a tripartite contract on the swapping of 1.5-2 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan through Iran per year was signed between Iran and Azerbaijan in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on the sidelines of the 15th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).

The implementation of the contract began on January 1, 2022.
