BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11. Just as climate change is a pressing global problem, the fight against it must gain equal urgency, UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change Elisa Morgera said at a press conference titled "La Ruta del Clima: Addressing loss and damage, reparations, and climate debt: Human rights obligation, not a charity" held within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Trend reports.
“Although climate change is a global challenge affecting the entire planet, it is the least developed, developing, and formerly colonial nations that bear the brunt of its impacts. The primary driver of this crisis is the excessive release of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
Since the 1990s, these emissions have far exceeded acceptable levels, with the volume many times higher than what is considered sustainable. Our calculations indicate that trillions of dollars are required to protect the global population from the devastating effects of climate change. The central goal of COP29 is to secure these much-needed funds,” Morgera said.
She also stressed that addressing climate change must be the responsibility of every nation.
The Rapporteur also emphasized that the measures taken to prevent a climate catastrophe will not only save humanity but also protect our flora and fauna. To achieve meaningful progress in the fight against climate change, she stressed that political will is essential.
COP29 is officially starting today in Baku. The event, which will take place from November 11 through 22, will bring together world leaders, politicians, and climate experts to discuss the pressing issues of climate change. Climate finance, emission reduction targets, and global cooperation are on the agenda. It is expected that the results of COP29 will have a significant impact on the formation of the future climate strategy of the planet.
