BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. A press conference titled "USCAN: A Game-Changer: How the US Election Results Signal a Climate Turning Point" was held as part of COP29, Trend reports.

The speakers included Kelly Stone, Senior Policy Analyst at ActionAid USA; Rachel Cletus, Director of Climate and Energy Policy at the Union of Concerned Scientists; Ashley Thomas, Senior Policy and Program Advisor at Oxfam America; and Sheelah Bearfoot, Representative of the Chiricahua Apache Nation, at the press conference.

Experts have voiced their concerns regarding the implications of the upcoming US presidential election on climate policy. They caution that a potential election of Donald Trump could result in a surge in fossil fuel production within the country, jeopardizing critical efforts to meet climate objectives.

Nevertheless, it is important to recognize that the Joe Biden administration currently holds power. Expectations for COP29 are high, with hopes that the US will showcase leadership, embrace accountability, and foster ambitious outcomes during negotiations.

Moreover, a key focus of the conference will be climate finance assistance, which is vital for low-income countries striving to accelerate their transition to clean energy, adapt to the impacts of climate change, and address losses and damages fairly and equitably.

To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened on November 11 at the Baku Olympic Stadium.

The event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to date and is the first time the region has hosted the event in Azerbaijan. Within COP29, the highest-level event - the summit of world leaders on climate action - will be held on November 12–13.

The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance. The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.
