Georgian Railway increases cargo transportation

JSC Georgian Railway (GR) transported 5.46 million tons of cargo in January through June 2020, which is 7.6 percent more compared to the same period in 2019, Trend reports, referring to the company's message.

The largest volume of cargo transportation fell on transit, which for the six months of this year increased by 19.2 percent - up to 2.95 million tons (54.1 percent of the total volume of cargo transportation). Import traffic increased by 1.2 percent to 1.23 million tons (22.6 percent), and export - decreased by 9.2 percent to 543,200 tons (9.9 percent).

The volume of domestic cargo transportation decreased by 6.5 percent, to 729,200 tons (13.3 percent).

Rail transportation of oil and oil products increased over six months of this year by 0.4 percent - up to 1.46 million tons (26.7 percent of the total freight traffic).

For other main types of cargo, growth was recorded in the transportation of chemical and mineral fertilizers - by 64.4 percent, up to 578,400 tons, iron and manganese ore - by 2 times, up to 270,700 tons, as well as non-ferrous metal ores - by 1 percent, to 340,800 tons.

A decrease was noted in the transportation of grain and grain products - by 19.1 percent, to 136,100 tons, sugar and raw materials for its production - by 45.9 percent, to 98,400 tons.

Container traffic by rail in January through June increased by 9.1 percent - up to 40,295 thousand TEU (the equivalent of a 20-foot container).

In 2019, 10.86 million tons of cargo were transported via the Georgian Railway, which is 8.6 percent more than in the previous year. Container traffic increased by 39 percent - up to 78,943 TEU.

The Georgian railway is an integral part of the East-West transport corridor. The operational length of Georgia's railways is 1,324 km. The system includes 45 tunnels, 1,714 bridges, ferry crossings with Russia and Ukraine.
