Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan in talks to increases mutual number of flights

Direct flights on the various routes between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan may be launched if the situation with COVID-19 improves, Trend reports with reference to the Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Infrastructural Development.

The topic was discussed during the meeting of Kazakhstan’s Minister of Industry and Infrastructural Development Beibut Atamkulov and Uzbek Ambassador to Kazakhstan Saidikram Niyazkhodzhaev.

During the meeting the parties noted the increase in the cargo transportation volume between the countries. Trade turnover between countries amounted to $3.3 billion in 2019, whereas 9 million tons of cargo were transported in transit via Kazakhstan railways from Uzbekistan.

In turn cargo turnover between countries amounted to 5 million tons over seven months of 2020, which is 648,320 tons more than during the same period last year.

The parties also considered increase of the number of flights on the Tashkent – Almaty route, and launch of flights on Tashkent – Nur-Sultan route.

The parties also talked the issue of opening flights Turkestan - Samarkand, Taraz - Nukus and Aktau – Urgench routes. These flights are to be operated by Kazakh airline companies.

The parties also discussed launch of trains operation between Uzbekistan and Russia through territory of Kazakhstan.

The decision on the topic will be made by the Intergovernmental Commission.

In June 2020, Kazakhstan announced a decision to launch international flights to several countries following coronavirus-related restrictions on flights. The flights are being gradually resumed to Turkey, China, South Korea, Thailand, and Japan from June 20, 2020.

The list was then further expanded and included Hungary, India, Germany, Czech Republic, Malaysia, Egypt, Ukraine, Poland, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.

Recently the list of countries was extended with the UAE, Belarus, Germany, the Netherlands, Egypt, Ukraine, and Russia.

The first two cases of coronavirus infection were detected in Kazakhstan among those who arrived in Almaty city from Germany on March 13, 2020.
