BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 27. Iran is developing its largest airport, Imam Khomeini International Airport, with the help of China and its own oil exports, Trend reports.
The project was launched on November 25, with the attendance of Iran’s Road and Urban Development Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash. The development of the airport will cost 2.5 billion euros, which will be paid for by Iran’s crude oil exports to China.
Due to the sanctions imposed by the US and western countries, Iran cannot access the money from its oil exports easily. Therefore, it decided to use its oil revenues to improve the Imam Khomeini Airport without transferring the funds to Iran.
The airport will be developed by a Chinese company in five years. The project will include a passenger terminal, an airstrip, aircraft connection bridges, an air traffic control center, cargo warehouses, and more. The total area of the project is 410,000 square meters.
When the project is completed, the Imam Khomeini International Airport will be able to serve 100 million passengers a year. Currently, the airport has the capacity to serve 6.5 million passengers and handle 120,000 tons of cargo per year.
