Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar spoke about the construction of a landfill for processing solid household waste in the East Kazakhstan region, Trend reports referring to Kazinform.

“According to the administration of the East Kazakhstan region, ‘Modernization of solid waste management system in city of Semey’ project is implemented beyond the public-private partnership. Today in the city of Semey there is a solid waste landfill with an area of 69.11 hectares, built in 1998,” Sklyar stated. “In the framework of cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), an analysis and study of the implementation of the project to modernize this landfill is being carried out.”

He reminded that on June 5, 2018, the regional administration signed a preliminary agreement with the EBRD.

“The implementation of a joint project that meets international standards will help solve the problem of solid waste disposal and achieve a high level of waste management at all stages, as a result will reduce CO2 emissions into the environment by more than 40 percent,” the deputy PM noted.

“This project will be the first project in Kazakhstan under the EBRD's Green Cities program, which is aimed at developing environmentally sustainable urban infrastructure,” concluded Sklyar.
