BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 5. The At Bashy hydropower plant (HPP) in Kyrgyzstan’s Naryn region increased its capacity from 40 MW to 45.7 MW and its operational lifespan by 25–40 years after the HPP’s reconstruction, Trend reports with reference to the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan.

Taking part in the official completion ceremony of the HPP, the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Japarov highlighted the importance of the At Bashy HPP for the region.

"The hydropower potential of Kyrgyzstan is very high, with about 40,000 rivers and glaciers, on which the four highest peaks in the world are located. We are ready to use this potential and create all conditions for future investors. The completion of the reconstruction of the At Bashy HPP is direct evidence of this," the Chairman said.

He added that from now on, the At Bashy HPP will not only be able to provide the population of the Naryn region with stable electricity but will also make a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of the entire region.

The project was financed by a grant from Switzerland. According to the Cabinet of Ministers, $25 million was allocated for the reconstruction and modernization of all electromechanical equipment of the HPP.

Meanwhile, Japarov noted that in 2022, 15 billion soms ($171.6 million) were allocated for the development of the energy sector of Kyrgyzstan.
