Iran, World Powers Start Third Session of Talks in Geneva

Iran Materials 7 December 2010 13:02 (UTC +04:00)

Iran and the Group 5+1 started the third session of their talks in Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday morning, FNA reported.

The senior diplomats from Iran and the 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council member states - Russia, China, Britain, France and the US - plus Germany) are scheduled to discuss nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament as well as cooperation in civilian nuclear technology today.

The agenda for today's talks was decided by the two sides at the end of the second round of their talks last night.

All the three topics have been cited and demanded in Iran's package of proposals to the world powers.

Observers believe that following the highly important agreement held between the two sides, negotiations are much likely to result in a framework for the continuation of the talks.

The Iranian delegation to the negotiations includes Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and chief negotiator Saeed Jalili, SNSC Undersecretary for Foreign Policy and International Security Affairs Ali Baqeri, SNSC Undersecretary for media affairs Abulfazl Zohrehvand, Advisor to the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) for Legal Affairs Hamid Reza Asgari and Deputy Foreign Minister for European Affairs Ali Ahani.

But the world powers have changed the team of their negotiators and replaced the German, French, British and Chinese representatives for the multifaceted Geneva talks with Iran.

Reports from Geneva said yesterday that the US and Russia are the only 5+1 members who have sent their previous negotiators to the talks with Iranian diplomats in Geneva and the other four states are represented by a number of diplomats who are new to the subject.

During the Monday negotiations, US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs William Burns and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov head the American and Russian delegations as in the previous round of talks.

This is the first time the 5+1 has changed its team of negotiators as its members were always represented by the same diplomats in the talks with Iran.
