Aquaculture production has grown 47- fold over the last five years in Iran's Markazai Province.

In 2007, 43 tons of farmed seafood was produced in the province, while in 2011, that number had grown to 2,051 tons, the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) reports.

Hassan Akbari, the head of fisheries management for the province's Agriculture Jahad Organisation said identifying water resources and the existing talent for fish farms are the reasons for the growth.

Fish farms play an important role in creating jobs and developing the region's economy, especially for rural families, said Mr Akbari.

Last year (Iran's solar year ends on March19) 28 million trout fly were released into 16 fish farm units and 12.5 million decorative fish were released into 35 other pools in the Markazi Province.
