Iran’s National Petrochemical Company (NPC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japanese Sojitz Company to cooperate in Methanol-to-Propylene (MTP) technology.

The document was signed by Marzieh Shahdaei, head of the NPC and Masaru Sato, regional director at Sojitz Corporation in Tehran on Oct. 8, the oil ministry’s SHANA news agency reported.

Shahdaei said that implementation of MTP projects is one of main priorities of Iran’s oil ministry, given the huge natural gas resources in the country.

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications including packaging and labeling, textiles (e.g., ropes, thermal underwear and carpets), stationery, plastic parts and reusable containers of various types, laboratory equipment, loudspeakers, automotive components, and polymer banknotes.

Iran’s polypropylene production capacity was 965,000 tons in 2013. The figure is planed to increase to four million tons by 2020 and eight million tons by 2025.
