BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.22

Trend:

Negotiation between Atomic Energy Organization of Iran(AEOI) and Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi reached diplomatic and technical achievements, said Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman.

"The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran has made many efforts that the agreement would be based on (Iranian)parliament's framework, as it is stated in a joint statement with the IAEA," said Saeed Khatibzadeh, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"Some of the verification agreement based on IAEA safeguards‎ is that cameras would remain but no film would be provided to the IAEA therefore not only the voluntary implementation of the Additional Protocol has stopped but new agreements are also formed based on parliament's law that would be announced by the AEOI," he said.

"What has been agreed between the AEOI and the IAEA is fully based on parliament law, the implementation of Additional Protocol would stop and some of necessary verification and monitoring activities would remain for up to 3 months, perhaps the main technical issue is cameras and no film would be provided to the IAEA," he said.

"Based on parliament law the implementation of the Additional Protocol would stop on Tuesday(February 23), Iran and the IAEA has reached a technical achievement based on parliament law and we would continue our relations with the IAEA," he said.

The IAEA's website announced that The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recalled and reaffirmed the spirit of cooperation and enhanced mutual trust that led to the Joint Statement in Tehran on 26 August 2020, and the importance of continuing that cooperation and trust.

The AEOI informed the IAEA that to comply with the act passed by the Parliament of the Islamic Republic of Iran called “Strategic Action to Cease Actions and Protect the interest of Iranian Nation” (The “Law”) Iran will stop the implementation of the voluntary measures as envisaged in the JCPOA, as of 23 February 2021.

The terms of the agreement include:

Iran continues to implement fully and without limitation its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA as before.

To a temporary bilateral technical understanding, compatible with the Law, whereby the IAEA will continue with its necessary verification and monitoring activities for up to 3 months.

To keep the technical understanding under regular review to ensure it continues to achieve its purposes.
