By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Iran is currently working on manufacturing a number of new destroyers, including the third generation of the Jamaran destroyer, said Rear Admiral Gholamreza Khadem Bigham, the Iranian Deputy Commander of the Navy.

Manufacturing the Jamaran destroyer in different capacities is on the agenda, Iran's IRNA news agency quoted Bigham as saying May 25.

The first generation of the Jamaran destroyer was launched in 2010. It is equipped with torpedoes and electronic radar. It is 94 meters long and weighs over 1,500 metric tons.

The second generation of Jamaran destroyer, "Jamaran 2", was launched in the Caspian Sea in 2013.

Jamaran 2 is powered by a 20,000-horsepower engine with a speed of 30 knots and has the capability to carry helicopters, different surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, advanced artilleries and torpedo system. It is also equipped with an electronic war system.

The third generation of the destroyer, "Sahand", with a power of two times more than the Jamaran destroyer, is passing its final stages, Bigham said.

Iran has recently made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.
