Presidential candidate of Armenia Paruyr Hayrikyan has posted a video online in which he shares his thoughts regarding the attempt on his life stating he will hold a final rally at Freedom Square in Yerevan on the last day of the campaign, Feb. 16, tert.am reported.
On January 31, the candidate for presidency of Armenia, Paruyr Hayrikyan was shot in the shoulder in Tpagrichneri Street (Pechatniki) in the centre of Yerevan, where his parents reside.
According to the Constitution of Armenia, in the event of insurmountable obstacles for a candidate, the election of the president is postponed for two weeks.
Hayrikyan has twice changed his decision to appeal to the Constitutional Court for postponement of elections. Last time he withdrew his application after other presidential candidates refused to unite behind him. He gave the protracted hunger strike of candidate Andrias Ghukasyan, who will not be able to stand another two weeks, as a reason for withdrawing his request.
The sixth Armenian presidential election will be held Feb.18 from 08:00 to 20:00 local time. The head of state is elected for five years.
Those running for the presidency are the incumbent president and ruling Republican Party leader Serzh Sargsyan, former Prime Minister Grant Bagratyan, chairman of the Heritage Party Raffi Hovhannisyan, Paruyr Hayrikyan, Arman Melikyan, Andrias Ghukasyan and Vardan Setrakyan.
