Police disperse protesters in Batumi – local reporter

( Civil ) - Police dispersed a small group of students in Batumi, who were planning to protest outside the local university on November 8, a local journalist told Civil.Ge speaking on the phone from Batumi.

"Students started to gather outside the university at about 11 am [local time] and the riot police was deployed there immediately, which used tear gas. Several students were beaten up," Eter Turadze, an editor of the local newspaper Batumelebi, said.

President Saakashvili imposed emergency rules late on November 7 on the entire territory of Georgia, banning demonstrations, dissemination of information and strikes.

Turadze also said that a group of local students decided to hold a rally in Batumi after riot police dispersed protesters in Tbilisi on November 7. "There was an attempt by the activists from the Republican and People's opposition parties to joint the rally yesterday by this group of students announced they did not want any political group to be affiliated with their protest," she said.
