The Georgian Prime Minister has promised PACE deputies that Georgia will not politically persecute political opponents in the country.

The country is in the process of the restoration of justice, which has been demanded by the population, Bidzina Ivanishvili told PACE deputies on Tuesday.

"Specific crimes committed by former officials are being investigated by law enforcement agencies along with international organizations that will not allow for the conversion of the process of restoration of justice and the rule of law into political persecution," Ivanishvili said.

According to the Prime Minister, former Supreme Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg has been invited to Georgia to conduct this process.

However, he advised the MEPs not to confuse the concepts of co-habitation and restoration of justice.

"We are cooperating with President Mikheil Saakashvili, and I think that the co-habitation process is proceeding normally, although with difficulty," he said.

Ivanishvili called for the PACE deputies not to succumb to "opposition's lies" when it comes to making Council recommendations.
