The European Union called on all Yemeni political parties and activists to exercise restraint and start quickly a serious and genuine dialogue, Xinhua quoted the official Saba news agency as reporting on Sunday.
The EU also called on Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to put the reform initiative he announced into concrete and practical steps, according to Saba.
"There is a need for urgent, concrete and credible action to meet the aspirations of the Yemeni people," Catherine Ashton, the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, said in a statement on Saturday.
Ashton expressed grief and sorrow for the victims and injuries due to violence in the anti-government protests in Sanaa and some other Yemeni cities, emphasizing that "the violence and using force against demonstrators are condemned by the European Union."
The Yemeni government is responsible for the safety of its citizens, she added.
Inspired by Tunisian and Egyptian protests, protesters in Yemen staged daily rallies since mid February, calling for Saleh's resignation.
Last Thursday, Saleh offered the opposition a fresh reform initiative, which said to transfer power to the parliament by the end of this year but was swiftly rejected by the opposition.
