Damascus has agreed to stop troops movement, use of heavy weapons and withdraw troops from populated areas on April 10 and has demanded that the armed opposition stop the violence within 48 hours, the UN Security Council president said Monday, dpa reported.
US Ambassador Susan Rice told reporters that Kofi Annan, the UN-Arab League envoy, told the UN Security Council that Syria informed him on Sunday of the agreement to stop the fighting on April 10.
"The UN Security Council fully supports Annan's six-point plan and ... the implementation of the plan," Rice said.
Syria's UN Ambassador Bashar Jaafari said his government is "committed" to make Annan's mission a success. But he said the ceasefire will be "supervised under Syrian sovereignty."
