Malaysia calls for sanctions against Israel

Israel Materials 8 January 2009 13:04 (UTC +04:00)

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Thursday called for sanctions against Israel on moral grounds for launching strikes on Gaza, reproted dpa.

Abdullah said the reasons for imposing sanctions on a particular country should include violation of moral standards.

"We have to include more reasons as to why a particular country should be sanctioned. It is important that moral issues also be taken into account," Abdullah said.

The premier did not say if the sanctions should be economic or military, adding that the UN would decide on the form.

Muslim-majority Malaysia is a staunch critic of Israel, which launched strikes into the Gaza Strip beginning December 27.

Abdullah had earlier said that any form of ceasefire could only be made after Israeli forces leave Gaza.

More than 700 people were killed, 3,000 injured and some 5,000 people have fled the border area in attacks aimed at snuffing out Hamas militants.
