Stoke City boosted their ranks as they look to avoid relegation from the English Premier League by signing striker James Beattie from Sheffield United on Monday night, dpa reported.
The former Southampton and Everton striker signed a two-and-a-half year deal with Stoke for a fee that could rise to 3.5 million pounds (5.2 million dollars).
"I've been brought up to score goals," a delighted Beattie, 30, said. "The gaffer (Tony Pulis) has been great with me, outlining what he wants me to do and what my role will be within the team.
"I'm definitely ready to give the Premier League another crack and I'm delighted with the opportunity. Stoke City have given me that and hopefully I can show the fans what I can do straight away.
"Hopefully I can help the club stay up, it's what I've come here to do. If the club didn't have high expectations of staying up I wouldn't have signed."
Stoke are just one point above the relegation zone.
