An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 hit off Japan's Ryukyu Islands Wednesday, said the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Xinhua reported.
The focus of the quake, which occurred at 5:53 p.m. (0853 GMT), was located some 10 km under the sea off south Daito Island, some 400 km east of Okinawa Island, said JMA.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to properties,and no tsunami warning was issued.
