Turkish Foreign Ministry confirmed on late Sunday that four Turkish engineers have been kidnapped in Afghanistan, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported on Monday.
Gunmen kidnapped four Turkish engineers working for Projea Company and their local driver in the eastern Afghan province of Paktia, near the border with Pakistan, during a visit to a construction project for a border police post, Foreign Ministry spokesman Selcuk Unal was quoted as saying, Xinhua reported.
No one has claimed responsibility yet for the incident, the agency reported.
The ministry has informed Afghan authorities, NATO and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan (ISAF) and launched a series of initiatives to rescue the Turkish citizens and their local driver, the spokesman said.
Afghan authorities said a large-scale operation had been under way to find the victims, said the report.
