Turkey reveals its shipwreck statistics

In 2017, 209 shipwreck cases were registered in Turkey, Turkey’s Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications said in its report.

According to the report, 73 people were killed, 33 gone missing and 925 people were saved in shipwrecks in 2017.

In Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits in Marmara Sea 127 shipwreck cases were registered in 2017, resulting in 28 killed, 15 missing and 397 saved, the document noted.

“In Aegean Sea, 43 shipwreck cases were registered in 2017, resulting in 35 killed, 8 missing and 468 saved,” the report of Turkish Transport Ministry said.

In Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea 39 shipwreck cases were registered in 2017, resulting in 10 killed, 13 missing and 60 saved, the report noted.

In 2016, 504 shipwreck cases were registered in Turkey, resulting in 183 killed, 96 missing and 13,360 saved.
