Baku, Azerbaijan, March 14

By Emil Ismayilov - Trend:

Baku Metro plans to commission the first two stations of the "purple" line in late 2014, a source from Baku Metro told Trend on March 14. Initially plans were to commission the stations in May.

The work on construction of the stations is in the final stage and there remains work on upgrading the territory of their location, according to the source.

"Territory needs to be upgraded, all necessary infrastructures must be created and there should be a free and convenient communication between Baku International Bus Terminal and the new subway station. This will require additional time," the source said.

The stations were originally planned to be commissioned by late 2013, but this timeframe was postponed due to delays in resolving the issues of resettlement and payment of compensation.

Total operation of the "purple" line is expected for 2016.

Currently, the length of Baku Metro lines is 34.6 kilometers. Baku Metro currently has two lines and plans to increase the number of subway lines to five, the length - to 119 kilometers, and the number of stations - to 76.

Baku Metro has been operating since 1967 and has 23 stations. Previously, a 20-year program of development of the Baku Metro was adopted.
