Adilbek Zhaksybekov has been appointed Astana's mayor, says the tweet on Kazakh president's official Twitter page Oct. 22.

"President Nazarbayev introduced the new mayor to the staff," a statement says.

Zhaksybekov was born in 1954. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (Moscow) in 1977.

He was trained at the Plekhanov Moscow Institute of National Economy in 1987. He was elected to the Senate (upper house of Parliament) of Kazakhstan in 1995.

Zhaksybekov was appointed the first deputy mayor of Akmola region, then Mayor of Astana in 1996. Then he served as Minister of Industry and Trade, the head of the presidential administration.

He served as the first Deputy Chairman of the People's Democratic Party Nur Otan - Advisor to the Kazakh president from January 23 to October 13, 2008.

He served as ambassador of Kazakhstan to the Russian Federation from November 2008 to June 2009.

Zhaksybekov has been appointed Defense Minister of Kazakhstan since June 2009. He has held the post of the Secretary of State of the Republic of Kazakhstan since April 2014.
