Turkmenistan's Society of the Blind and Deaf held a ceremony today to hand over to the School of Blind Children equipment for printing schoolbooks in the Braille system provided by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat.
Ambassador Arsim Zekolli, the Head of the OSCE Centre, participated in the ceremony.
The state-of-the art equipment includes a Braille printer, a monitor, a desktop computer and software, as well as slate pencils and devices for writing Braille. The donation was made as part of a Centre project to improve access to quality education for blind children, the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat reported.
"According to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, persons with disabilities shall be able to access an inclusive, quality and free primary and secondary education on an equal basis with others in the communities they live," said Zekolli.
"This project, which is implemented in close co-operation with Turkmenistan's Society of the Blind and Deaf, is a contribution to the country's efforts to ensure equal quality access to basic services and rights for blind children. The donation of equipment to produce teaching materials in Braille will support the sustainability of these efforts, as hundreds of children will be able to benefit from its use during the next years."
The project was implemented with financial support from the OSCE Charity Funds.
