An Iranian airplane traveling to the country's western city of Kermanshah from Tehran flew back to Tehran after experiencing technical problems.

The airplane made an urgent landing in Tehran's Mehrabad airport last night, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on Aug. 21.

The plane was tasked to bring passengers from Kermanshah to Tehran and was not carrying passengers when the incident occurred.

Reportedly a failure in one of the plane's engines forced the pilot to return to Tehran after flying half of the flight path.

The airplane belongs to Iran's Mahan airlines.

It should be noted that an Iranian passenger plane crashed on Aug. 10 moments after takeoff from the International Mehrabad Airport in Iran. Thirty-seven people, including six children, lost their lives on the spot while two others died in a Tehran hospital. Nine others suffered serious burns leaving several in critical condition.

Iran has suffered a series of aeroplane crashes, blamed on its ageing aircraft and poor maintenance.

Western sanctions prevent Iran from updating its US aircraft and make it difficult to get European spare parts or planes. The country has come to rely on Russian aircraft, many of them Soviet-era planes.
