Lebanon blames U.S. for jamming its internet

Arab World Materials 6 February 2011 04:30 (UTC +04:00)

Lebanese caretaker Telecoms Minister Charbel Nahhas said Saturday a U.S. ship was the cause of internet jamming in Lebanon, Xinhua reported.

"The problem, however, is due to a coordination error related to waves," Nahhas told the local OTV, adding that an investigation was underway to find out whether this act is intentional or not.

The An-Nahar newspaper on Saturday reported that movement of U. S. warships in the Mediterranean Sea has been disrupting the internet services in Lebanon over the past three weeks.

The newspaper said the interference which began as soon as the caretaker Prime Minister Saad Hariri's government collapsed in January are not the result of operations conducted by UNIFIL's naval force.

An-Nahar said the jamming has affected big companies and banks from the southern city of Saida all the way to the Lebanese-Syrian border in the north.
