Car bomb in Yemen kills at least 13

At least 13 people were killed Monday and more than 25 others wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up near a post of pro-regime militiamen in southern Yemen, Mareb Press reported.

The attack took place in Lawder and targeted a post which belongs to the Popular Resistance Committees, whose militiamen have battled militants linked to Al-Qaeda in the area, dpa reported.

It came hours after the Yemeni government had rejected a proposal by some clergymen in the south for a truce with Al-Qaeda militants.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the group's branch in Yemen, has claimed responsibility for several suicide attacks across Yemen.

Last year, the Yemeni government launched a wide-scale attack on posts manned by Al-Qaeda in the southern Abyan province. Militants from the group have taken advantage of the Yemeni uprising in 2011, which resulted in the ousting of president Ali Abdullah Saleh, to seize large swathes of territory across areas in the south.
