Georgian Defence Minister Irakli Alasania has called on Russia to change its rhetoric.

It would be better if the Russian side made reciprocal steps towards the new Georgian government's proposals, Alasania told journalists, commenting on Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's recent statement.

Lavrov said Russia expects concrete steps from Georgia. In particular, he said, we are seeking to normalise relations with Russia and Georgia again refers to Abkhazia and South Ossetia as occupied territories.

"Personally, Lavrov said nothing to me. I would like it if Russia's reciprocal steps and rhetoric would be more adequate to give a positive signal to the new Georgian government. One of these signals is the appointment of a special representative for relations with Russia," Alasania said.

Military action was launched in the Georgian region of South Ossetia on Aug.8, 2008. Later Russian troops occupied the city of Tskhinvali and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August.
