UN Security Council resolutions must be implemented by all member states – Mammadyarov

Baku, Azerbaijan, Feb.9

UN Security Council Resolutions must be implemented by all member states, said Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

He made the remarks at a joint news conference with EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, following the meeting of the EU-Azerbaijan Cooperation Council on Feb. 9.

Mammadyarov noted that one of the biggest challenges which Azerbaijan is facing is the unresolved Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“I briefed Mogherini about the latest discussions with OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs. The conflict must be resolved first of all, based on territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. It is a must for all member states to implement UN Security Council resolutions,” said the minister.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
